Key differences
One app or every app. ChatGPT's saved memories and chat history work inside ChatGPT; OpenAI doesn't offer a way to use them in other AI apps. OwlMem is reachable from ChatGPT and from any other MCP client.
Personal or team. ChatGPT memory belongs to each person, and shared projects use project-only memory. In OwlMem the whole organization shares one knowledge base, and each AI has its own identity.
Automatic or deliberate. ChatGPT picks up memories from your chats automatically. OwlMem agents save lessons and facts on purpose, as Markdown you can read, review and revert in git.
Which one to choose
ChatGPT
Choose ChatGPT if you mostly use ChatGPT on your own and want it to remember your preferences automatically, with nothing to set up.
Choose OwlMem if you also use Claude, Cursor or Codex and want them to share what ChatGPT knows — and share it with your team.
Using both, or moving over
Keep ChatGPT's memory on for your personal preferences, and add OwlMem as a connector in ChatGPT so team knowledge goes where every AI can find it: in Settings → Apps & Connectors, turn on Developer mode and create a connector with https://mcp.owlmem.com/mcp. Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan; see the ChatGPT setup steps.
Questions
Can Claude or Cursor use my ChatGPT memory?
Not directly: OpenAI doesn't provide a way to share ChatGPT's memory with other AI apps. To give several AI apps the same memory, connect them all to an MCP memory server such as OwlMem.
Does my team share ChatGPT memory on business plans?
Memory is personal to each user. Shared projects in ChatGPT use project-only memory, which doesn't include members' personal memories. OwlMem is shared by the whole organization by design, while each person manages their own AI agents.
Does OwlMem replace ChatGPT memory?
No, it complements it. ChatGPT memory is good for your own preferences inside ChatGPT; OwlMem is for knowledge your team's AI agents should share across apps.
