Key differences
Inside Claude or across apps. Claude's memory and Projects live in Claude; Anthropic describes importing and exporting memory with other assistants as experimental. OwlMem is one MCP server that Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex and Gemini all use.
Team sharing. On Team and Enterprise plans you can share Projects, while each person's memory stays personal. In OwlMem the whole organization shares the knowledge base, memory and vault.
CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md. Claude Code reads memory files from your repository and home folder, which works well for one repository. OwlMem holds knowledge that spans repositories and machines, and its team rules (AGENTS.md) reach every AI when it connects.
Which one to choose
Claude
Choose Claude if you work mainly in Claude: memory and shared Projects cover the app, and CLAUDE.md files in your repository guide Claude Code.
Choose OwlMem if you want the same memory in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex, and a knowledge base that every AI on your team writes to.
Using both, or moving over
Keep CLAUDE.md for project conventions, and add a few lines that tell Claude to search OwlMem before it starts and to save what it learns — npx -y owlmem install writes them into ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md for you. In Claude on the web or desktop, add OwlMem under Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
Questions
Can ChatGPT or Cursor read Claude's memory?
Anthropic doesn't offer a direct way for other AI apps to read Claude's memory. CLAUDE.md files are plain Markdown in your repository, so any tool can open them, but they aren't shared memory. An MCP memory server such as OwlMem is something all of them can use.
Does OwlMem work with Claude Code?
Yes. Run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user owlmem https://mcp.owlmem.com/mcp, or tell Claude Code to read https://mcp.owlmem.com and set itself up. See the Claude Code steps.
Is Claude's memory on the free plan?
According to Anthropic's pricing page (October 2026), memory is available from the Free plan, and searching past chats is on paid plans. OwlMem's Free plan covers one AI agent; paid plans start at $19 a month.
