Key differences
Data model. Zep builds a temporal knowledge graph: an LLM pipeline extracts entities and facts from messages and business data, and each fact has a validity window. OwlMem stores Markdown pages in git and short facts with optional expiry dates — no graph.
Scope. Zep targets company data and the agents you build, with RBAC and ABAC governance, SOC 2 and HIPAA options and deployment in your own cloud (BYOC). OwlMem targets the AI apps your team already uses.
Open source. Zep's open-source engine is Graphiti (Apache-2.0); Zep Community Edition is no longer maintained. OwlMem is a managed service; its command-line tool is MIT-licensed.
Price. Zep has a free tier and paid plans from $125 a month. OwlMem is free for one AI agent, with paid plans from $19 a month (as of October 2026).
Which one to choose
Zep
Choose Zep if you need an enterprise context layer that merges business data and conversations into a temporal knowledge graph, with RBAC and ABAC governance and SOC 2 and HIPAA options.
Choose OwlMem if you want a lightweight shared memory and knowledge base for your team's AI agents, priced per AI agent and set up in a minute over MCP.
Using both, or moving over
Use Zep where your own agents need a governed graph of company data, and OwlMem for the day-to-day knowledge your team's coding and chat agents share. Both run MCP servers, so one AI client can connect to both.
Questions
Is Graphiti the same as Zep?
Graphiti is the open-source temporal knowledge graph framework from the Zep team (Apache-2.0) that you can run yourself. Zep is their hosted context platform, with governance, connectors and support.
Does OwlMem have a knowledge graph?
No. OwlMem keeps knowledge as Markdown pages and memories as short facts recalled by meaning. If reasoning over entities and relationships over time is central to your product, Zep or Graphiti is the better fit.
Can I self-host Zep or OwlMem?
Graphiti can be self-hosted, and the full Zep platform can run in your own cloud through its Enterprise BYOC option. OwlMem can't be self-hosted, but you can export its git repository or sync it to your own GitHub at any time.
